I think it was due to COVID because they acknowledged it in the S2 premiered.

I don’t recall them ever stating how Screech died in The Last Year Dance. It feels like they left it vague, almost as a nod to the idea that some parts of his story are better left to our imaginations rather than spelled out. I appreciate that ambiguity — it lets fans speculate and keep the character's legacy alive in our own minds.

As mentioned elsewhere, you have to remember that apparently Dustin Diamond was largely excommunicated from the rest of the cast when he released his book and the UnAuthorized Saved By the Bell movie came out. Dustin tried to say the ghost writer changed and made up things that were not said and apparently most of the cast did not accept that. The ghostwriter denied that and Diamond was credited as a producer for the film.

I noticed that the more salacious details from the book were NOT in the movie. Still, if the Mark Paul/Mario/Tiffani/Elizabeth/Lark all feel Dustin flat out lied about them, then they are not going to want him in the new project.
